About Dancing Classrooms
The Dancing Classrooms Youth Dance Company was created in 2006 in response to the demand for performances by “the kids from ‘Mad Hot Ballroom.’” Dancing Classrooms is the subject of that critically- acclaimed documentary film, as well as the inspiration for the feature film, “Take the Lead,” starring Antonio Banderas as Dancing Classrooms founder, Pierre Dulaine. Every child in the Youth Dance Company was introduced to ballroom dancing through Dancing Classrooms, the arts-in-education program that teaches teamwork, elegance, and respect through the practice of social dance. After completing the program as 5th-graders in their respective New York City Public Schools, the children were invited to continue their dance training through the Dancing Classrooms Academy, from which all company members were auditioned.Past performances venues have included the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (Avery
Fisher Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Midsummer Night Swing,) Jacobs Pillow (Inside/Out), the
US Open, and theNational Dance Foundation of Bermuda. Directed by Alee Reed, the Youth Dance Company has appeared on The Today Show, Inside Edition and Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps. Dancing Classrooms has expanded beyond New York City, with 20 sites across the United States and 3 international sites. During the 2010-11 school year, 42,000 children in 509 schools received the Dancing Classrooms program.
